Norton Antivirus used to be a real memory hog.It used to use alot of memory which made it impossible to do anything else while Norton was running.Symantec (the company that makes NAV) claims to have altered NAV so it uses less memory. They state: “Norton AntiVirus requires little memory and system resources. The new Norton Insight relies on extensive online intelligence to target only those processes at risk, resulting in faster, shorter, fewer scans.”
Unlike other anti-virus software Norton anti-virus, uses about 50 to 60mb of memory,and when pc.s running windows xp with just 256mb this is a large portion of the ram used.

Maybe Symantec has finally started to listen to customers who are fed up with the amount of RAM memory that NAV uses, because Symantec has announced that the 2009 Edition of NAV ” uses Norton Insight — an advanced “white list” system that catalogs all known “good” files. By keeping itself aware of what is 99.9% likely not to be a virus (e.g. Firefox. exe), it can decrease the amount of time spent scanning. Furthermore, it is clever enough to know when these “good” files have been tampered with.
